Steel Prices Moving UpFriday, December 11th, 2009Last week, I read a report from Goldman Sachs that said that we have seen the bottom in the steel prices for carbon based products for the year. This was report was shortly followed by e-mails from the mills to notify us that they will begin raising prices starting January 1 2010. ISO Re CheckThursday, September 3rd, 2009Last week we had our re certification audit for our ISO certification. I was very pleased, with the results, and our team did a great job. I want to especially thank Mike Warfield who is our Quality Director for his efforts. A lot of Roller Formers are not ISO qualified, so be careful when you are looking for a supplier for this should provide you the buyer with some confidences that we are doing what we say we are. If you have any questions please send them to us. Thanks Going GreenWednesday, July 29th, 2009It is funny to me that everyone is just starting to do this. At RDF, we have been working on this for the last five years. We have reduced the number of wood skids that we receive our material on. We have also been willing to work with our customers on using returnables. Last year, we removed all of the old lights in the plant and replaced them with newer models that will reduce the amount of light bulb changes and waste. They actually provide more light at half the cost. In addition to this we have been looking at our lubricants that we use in the plant, this make sense from a people perspective, and from an environmental one as well. We use a water soluble solution that evaporates while it is drying. Why Rollforming Vs Angle Iron or Channels produce at a MillTuesday, July 28th, 2009There are several reason why to use Roll Forming Vs Mill Iron, or Angle Iron. 1) Roll Forming offers a lot of different lengths Vs standard 8, 10, 12, 20 foot section, so we can reduce the cost of cutting to length. 2) Roll Formed parts will have shaper corners, and better control over angularity of the angles. 3) With Roll Forming we can add any hole combination without using a secondary punch press. New Projects at Roller DieMonday, July 20th, 2009Roller Die is acquiring some new equipment this year. we are in the process of purchasing a new 3 1/2 inch line. This will give us a lot more capabilities in the heavy gauge area. Please give us a call regarding any projects or questions about this machine. Price IncreasesMonday, July 20th, 2009This past friday, Nucor sent an e-mail to us saying that we they are going to raise their prices. I know a lot of people who keep saying that the prices won’t hold, and they are waiting for a decrease. I would not wait to lock in prices, for we are already seeing improvement in the economic. The first positive sign is that the auto industry said that they will increase volume to 12.0 million from a low of 8 million. The dollar is still decreasing against all the other currencies, so there will be less imports of steel. The last reason that I just herd today was that China has decided that they would invest a lot of the dollars that they are holding into hard assets; such as oil, steel, cooper, and other commodities. Cable Barriers SystemsTuesday, July 14th, 2009This past weekend I was driving to Nashville and saw a horrible crash that had two cars and an 18 wheel tied up in the cable barriers. The system stop an 18 wheel truck from coming across the median and causing more problems, and probably saved lives of the people in the oncoming traffic. I was sad for it appeared as if someone had lost their life in this horrible accident. I am only assuming this, from the somber faces of the rescue people, and the 20 plus miles of stopped traffic on the other side of the road. Then it hit me, that RDF made the post that were installed, and that we probably saved lives for the 18 wheeler did not cross the road, and hit head on with oncoming traffic. Steel AvailabilityTuesday, July 7th, 2009I am getting concerned with the availability of steel even for the most basic products. We have seen our lead time increase this past week. In addition to this pricing has gone up over 20 percent as well. If you want to protect yourself I would suggest that you contact us about setting yourself up on a contract. The contract will insure that the product you want will be there. It does not protect against steel price increases. These contracts usually last for about three months. Under normal conditions we are able to secure tonnage and pricing for the entire term. |
