In order to advertise a product as “Made in America,” companies must comply with the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) regulations. The FTC standard states a product must be “all or virtually all” made in the U.S. This standard means that only a negligible part of the product was sourced or manufactured overseas. This law requires cars to display a label stating where the final assembly on the car occurred, the percentage of equipment that originates from the U.S. and Canada, and the country of origin of the engine and transmission.

The Buy American Act further requires that products must be manufactured in the U.S. with 50% or more U.S. parts to be considered for government procurement projects where the government must purchase products made in the USA.
