While the material handling industry has always been a big client for roll formed parts, new advances in warehousing technology, using additional roll formed parts, are opening up additional efficiencies in storage systems. One particularly fascinating improvement, commonly used in Europe and increasing in application in America, are automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS).
These systems allow storage racks to be both tall and deep, holding dozens of similar pallets on a single row, allowing for dense storage in a limited area and maximizing the use of warehouse square footage. A forklift operator can place the pallet in the first slot and the ASRS slides underneath the pallet to move it backwards into it’s place, clearing up the first slot for additional pallets. Similarly, the ASRS will bring a pallet forward for loading when it’s needed.
The ASRS system not only allows for more storage density, it also reduces labor costs and inventory tracking errors. Putting these systems into place requires that a warehouse racking system is designed for the ASRS system and has a small amount of additional space between the levels of the pallets for the trolley/lift to move along. These additional rails can also be created using roll formed galvanized steel designed to allow the trolley to smoothly travel while providing the strength and structure to support the weight of the pallets when lifted.
Roller Die + Forming already works with a number of US-based material handling companies who are implementing ASRS systems in their warehouses. We understand the different requirements that these systems have and have the capabilities to form heavy gauge steel into exactly the shapes needed to let those trolleys do their work.
